PIK3CA mutation targeted therapy: what to know

PIK3CA is a gene involved in signals that help cells grow. A change in this gene can be found in some cancers. The result is a feature of the tumour, not a diagnosis by itself and not proof that the cancer was inherited.

Testing may use tissue from a biopsy or, in selected situations, a blood sample containing tumour material. The report may guide whether a targeted medicine is suitable, whether it should be combined with another treatment, and whether another option is more appropriate.

Ask which sample was tested, whether the result is confirmed, and what the finding means for your specific cancer. Your oncology team will consider the tumour location, stage, previous treatment, other gene findings, medicines you take, and your general health.

Targeted treatment can be given as tablets or another prescribed form. Keep a record of new symptoms and take the medicine exactly as directed. Do not stop it or add supplements without discussing the change with your cancer team.

Contact your oncology team promptly for severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, a new rash, mouth sores, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, or signs of high blood sugar such as unusual thirst and frequent urination. Urgent help is needed for trouble breathing, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
