Pigmented Dermatofibroma: What to Know

How the structures involved in Dermatofibroma differ from normal

Short answer

A pigmented dermatofibroma is usually a firm, benign skin nodule, but a changing or atypical pigmented lesion should be examined before treatment is chosen.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

Dermatofibromas are small, solid growths in the skin that can feel firm and may dimple inward when gently pinched. They often occur on the limbs and can be brown, pink, or darker than nearby skin. Pigmentation can make one resemble a mole or another skin growth, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A clinician may use a dermatoscope and consider the lesion's history, texture, borders, and colour pattern. If uncertainty remains, a biopsy or complete removal may provide tissue for diagnosis. Do not try to cut, freeze, or burn the nodule at home.

What you can do

Take a clear photograph with a scale beside the lesion and note any change in size, shape, colour, sensation, or bleeding. Reduce friction from shaving or tight clothing if the nodule is repeatedly irritated. If it is confirmed as a dermatofibroma and causes no problem, observation may be reasonable.

Removal is an option when the diagnosis is uncertain or the lesion is persistently painful, itchy, or troublesome. Surgical excision removes the nodule but leaves a wound and a scar; your clinician can discuss the likely scar location and care.

When to seek care

Book a prompt skin review for a nodule that is enlarging, developing uneven colour or borders, bleeding, ulcerating, becoming painful, or looking different from your other lesions. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding or rapidly worsening redness, warmth, and discharge after a procedure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, whether dermoscopy or biopsy is needed, what excision would involve, and how the scar would be cared for afterward.

Questions people ask

Is every pigmented dermatofibroma harmless?

A typical confirmed dermatofibroma is benign, but an unusual or changing pigmented lesion needs professional assessment.

Does it have to be removed?

No. Monitoring can be suitable when the diagnosis is clear and the nodule is not troublesome.
