What should you know about phospho flow cytometry?

Cells from blood, bone marrow or another sample are treated so their signalling state is preserved. The laboratory uses antibodies that bind selected phosphorylated proteins, then passes individual cells through a flow cytometer. Fluorescent labels help the instrument identify cell features and the signalling markers present inside each cell.

The result describes patterns in the tested sample, such as differences between cell groups or changes after a laboratory stimulus. It can support research, disease characterization or treatment-related investigations, but the meaning depends on the markers chosen and the clinical question. It is not a general scan of the whole body and cannot by itself establish every diagnosis.

Ask which sample is required, how quickly it must reach the laboratory and whether medicines could affect the result. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the treating team tells you to. If the sample comes from a bone marrow procedure, ask about local care instructions, dressing changes and activity afterward.

Request an explanation of the cell populations and signalling markers measured, rather than focusing on one isolated result. Phospho flow cytometry does not itself cause symptoms; any immediate concerns usually relate to collecting the sample. After a blood draw or marrow procedure, seek prompt advice for bleeding that continues despite pressure, increasing redness, fever, drainage, severe pain or marked swelling. Emergency care is appropriate for fainting that does not quickly improve, breathing difficulty or sudden confusion.
