What should you know about a Philips digital pathology scanner?

Short answer
A Philips digital pathology scanner creates detailed digital images of tissue slides so pathologists can examine findings on a screen and support a diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it scans
- Prepared tissue slides
- Who interprets it
- A pathologist
- Patient preparation
- Usually none for scanning
What the scanner does
After a tissue sample has been processed and placed on a glass slide, the scanner captures an image across the slide. The resulting file can be viewed at different magnifications, allowing a pathologist to move from the overall tissue pattern to individual cell features. The scan does not replace the tissue sample or the pathologist’s interpretation. It is a way to handle the microscopic image digitally.
Digital images can help a specialist compare areas of one slide, review several slides together, or discuss a case with another pathologist. Image quality depends on the specimen, slide preparation, focus and scan settings. A scanner is therefore one part of a diagnostic workflow, alongside clinical information, laboratory tests and other pathology methods.
What to do before and after scanning
Patients usually do not operate the scanner and do not need special preparation for the scanning step. Your clinical team first obtains and prepares the tissue through the planned biopsy or surgery. Ask whether your sample will be reviewed digitally, by conventional microscopy, or by both approaches.
When results are discussed, ask which findings came from the tissue examination, whether additional stains or tests are needed, and when the pathology report is expected. If a second specialist is reviewing the images, ask how that opinion will be combined with the original report. You can read more about Digital Pathology or Second Opinion when you want broader context.
When to seek care
The scanner itself is not a treatment and should not cause symptoms. Seek prompt medical advice for new or worsening symptoms related to the biopsy or surgery, such as bleeding that does not settle, increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, or pain that is becoming harder to control. Contact your care team if you have not received an expected pathology update and are unsure whom to call.
Questions for your doctor
Will my tissue be scanned as part of the diagnostic process? Which specialist will interpret the image? Are extra stains, molecular tests or another pathology opinion needed? When will the report be ready, and how will the result affect the next decision?
Questions people ask
Does the scanner diagnose cancer by itself?
No. It produces a digital view of a prepared tissue slide; a pathologist interprets it with the clinical context and any required laboratory tests.
Can digital pathology support another opinion?
Digital slide images may allow another pathologist to review the same material, depending on the laboratory’s workflow and image quality.
