What should you know about a PET v CT scan?

CT uses X-rays to create cross-sectional pictures that show size, shape, and location. PET uses a radioactive tracer to show how actively tissues are taking it up. When the images are registered together, an active focus can be located more precisely within the body.

Neither view should be interpreted alone. Normal tissues, inflammation, infection, and some medicines can affect PET activity, while CT findings can be non-specific. A clinician combines both images with your symptoms, examination, previous scans, and laboratory or pathology results.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about fasting, water, diabetes medicines, and other prescriptions. Tell staff about pregnancy, breastfeeding, kidney problems, previous reactions to an imaging contrast agent, and difficulty lying flat. Some CT examinations use contrast; the team will explain whether it is planned and check relevant safety details.

You will receive the PET tracer, rest quietly, and then lie still while the combined images are acquired. Afterward, follow instructions about fluids, activity, and contact with others. Ask how and when the report will be explained.

During or after the examination, report hives, swelling, warmth, dizziness, wheezing, or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, fainting, or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact the imaging centre if a delayed concern develops or you are uncertain about post-scan instructions.

Ask whether your appointment includes CT contrast, why both imaging methods are needed, and whether you must change any medicines. Ask what an uncertain finding could mean, whether another test is required, and when results will guide the next decision.
