PET Scan for a Lung Nodule: What to Know

A PET scan can show how actively a lung nodule takes up a tracer, but the result alone cannot confirm whether the nodule is cancerous. Doctors interpret the scan alongside the nodule's appearance on CT, its change over time, your medical history, and sometimes a tissue sample.

A PET scan uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to highlight areas with increased metabolic activity. A lung nodule that takes up more tracer may need closer assessment, but infection and inflammation can also cause increased uptake. Some cancers show little uptake, especially when a nodule is small or has certain cell features. The scan may also help doctors look at other areas when planning an evaluation.

The CT part of a PET/CT provides detail about the nodule's size, edges, and position. PET findings are therefore one part of a wider decision, rather than a stand-alone label.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and activity. Tell the team if you have diabetes, might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have difficulty remaining still. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for the tracer to circulate before imaging.

After the scan, ask when and how the report will be explained. Depending on the combined findings, follow-up may involve another CT scan, observation with planned imaging, or a biopsy to examine cells.

A lung nodule often causes no symptoms, so arrange the recommended follow-up even if you feel well. Contact your clinical team promptly if you develop new or worsening breathlessness, cough up blood, have chest pain, or feel suddenly very unwell. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, or chest pain that is intense or persistent.

Ask what the CT shows about the nodule, what the PET activity means in your situation, and whether infection or inflammation could affect the interpretation. You can also ask what follow-up schedule is planned, what would lead to a biopsy, and who will explain the results to you.
