What should you know about persistent runny nose?

The nose produces mucus to trap particles and keep its lining moist. A persistent runny nose may accompany Allergic Rhinitis, where sneezing and itchy or watery eyes follow triggers such as dust mites or pets. Viral illnesses such as a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 can also cause nasal discharge. Sinusitis becomes more relevant when congestion comes with facial pressure, reduced smell, thick mucus or fever. Clear watery discharge without illness may reflect non-allergic irritation from smoke, strong scents, dry air or temperature changes.

Notice whether the discharge is clear or coloured, whether one or both nostrils are affected, and what triggers it. Saline spray or rinse, fluids and avoiding smoke can ease irritation. If allergies seem likely, reduce exposure to the suspected trigger and ask a pharmacist or clinician about an appropriate treatment; nasal medicines need correct technique and some should not be used for prolonged periods. A clinician can examine the nose and throat and decide whether testing or treatment for infection is needed.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange medical review for persistent one-sided discharge, repeated nosebleeds, high fever, severe facial pain, eye swelling, or symptoms that interfere with sleep, feeding or daily activities. A clear fluid leak after a head injury also needs urgent assessment.
