What should you know about permanent laryngitis?

Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box. A common cold may cause a short episode, while voice overuse, smoke or other irritants, dehydration, allergies, and acid reflux can keep the vocal cords irritated. Hoarseness may come with a dry cough, throat clearing, or sore throat. Persistent symptoms need a clinical look because the cause cannot be identified from the voice alone.

A GP may ask when the change began, how you use your voice, whether swallowing hurts, and whether reflux or breathing symptoms occur. They may arrange further examination if needed.

Rest your voice without whispering, drink fluids, and avoid shouting, smoke, vaping, and dusty air. Use a microphone rather than speaking over noise. Treat nasal congestion or reflux only with advice suited to you; frequent throat clearing can add irritation, so sip water or swallow instead. Do not use antibiotics for hoarseness unless a clinician finds a bacterial reason.

Arrange a GP consultation when hoarseness persists, keeps returning, or affects work and communication. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling, coughing blood, or severe chest pain.
