Peripheral cellulitis: what to know

Cellulitis affects deeper skin layers and nearby soft tissue, often after bacteria enter through a cut, crack, bite, ulcer, or irritated area. The involved skin may become warm, tender, red, swollen, and increasingly tight. The border can expand, and the person may feel unwell or develop [Fever](/symptoms/fever/).

Athlete's foot can create cracks between the toes that allow bacteria to enter. Diabetes and reduced circulation can make a foot or leg infection more difficult to manage. Cellulitis is the condition associated with these findings; a red patch alone does not establish the diagnosis.

Arrange same-day medical assessment when cellulitis is suspected. A clinician examines the area, checks for an abscess or wound, and decides whether antibiotic treatment is needed. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and keep the skin clean. Elevating a swollen limb when resting may ease pressure, but it does not replace treatment.

Marking the edge of redness with a pen and noting the time can help show whether it is expanding, but do not delay care to monitor it. Avoid squeezing, massaging, or applying harsh products to the area. Follow wound-care instructions and address an entry point such as a foot rash.

Seek urgent medical help if redness spreads quickly, pain is severe or out of proportion, swelling becomes marked, or the skin turns dusky, blistered, or numb. Fever, chills, confusion, faintness, rapid breathing, or a racing heartbeat can signal a serious infection such as [Sepsis](/conditions/sepsis/). Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms appear.
