Perioral Impetigo

Impetigo may begin with fragile blisters or small sores that leak fluid and form a yellow-brown crust. It can spread across nearby skin through scratching or contact. Eczema such as atopic dermatitis can make the skin barrier easier to disrupt, but a crusted rash can have several causes and should be examined rather than self-diagnosed.

Arrange medical advice for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Keep the area clean with gentle washing, pat it dry, and avoid picking or removing crusts forcefully. Wash hands after touching the rash, do not share towels, face cloths or cosmetics, and launder items that contact the area. A clinician may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy for a limited area or antibiotic therapy for skin infection when broader treatment is needed.

Seek prompt assessment if the rash is spreading quickly, becoming swollen or painful, affecting the eyes, or accompanied by fever or marked tiredness. Urgent review is also sensible when a child is unwell, sores keep appearing, or treatment has not helped as expected.

Ask how long the infection may remain contagious, how to clean the area, whether close contacts need advice, and what to do if the medicine causes irritation or the crusting returns.
