Period comes back after menopause

Menopause is reached after twelve months without a menstrual period. Bleeding afterwards is called postmenopausal bleeding. It can come from thinning or irritation of the vaginal or womb lining, a cervical or uterine polyp, hormone treatment, or other changes. Many causes are treatable, but bleeding can also be an early sign of a womb or cervical problem, so its appearance cannot identify the cause by itself.

Make a note of the colour, amount, timing, clots, pain, discharge, and any medicines or hormone products you use. Bleeding from the vagina, urine, or rectum can be difficult to tell apart; describe what you notice rather than trying to diagnose its source.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist or primary-care clinician. They may ask about your menopause history and examine the vagina and cervix. Depending on your symptoms, evaluation may include an ultrasound, a cervical test when due, or a small sample from the womb lining. Do not stop prescribed hormone treatment without advice. If dryness or friction seems to trigger spotting, mention that too; it still deserves assessment.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy. Otherwise, contact a clinician promptly rather than waiting for another episode, because the timing and amount do not reliably show whether the cause is minor.

Ask what might be causing the bleeding, which examination or scan is appropriate, whether your medicines could contribute, and what symptoms should prompt faster review.
