Period After Breakthrough Bleeding: What to Know

Breakthrough bleeding is bleeding outside the expected period pattern. It can occur when starting, changing, missing, or inconsistently taking hormonal contraception. The next bleed may be a usual period, or the lining may shed irregularly for a while. Pregnancy, an infection such as chlamydia, cervical irritation, or an endometrial polyp can also cause bleeding between periods.

Write down whether the first bleed was spotting or a flow, when the next period began, and whether there was pain, discharge, bleeding after sex, or a missed contraceptive dose. Those details are more useful than judging the bleed by colour alone.

Take contraception exactly as prescribed and check the product instructions before changing it. If pregnancy is possible, use a pregnancy test and arrange advice about the result. Book a routine review when bleeding continues beyond the expected adjustment period, returns repeatedly, or affects sex or daily activities. A clinician can check for infection and decide whether the womb lining needs further assessment.

Seek urgent help for very heavy bleeding, faintness, severe lower-abdominal pain, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange prompt sexual-health or gynaecology advice for bleeding after sex, pelvic pain, or unusual discharge, particularly when infection is possible.
