Perinatal and postpartum depression

Short answer
Perinatal and postpartum depression are treatable mood conditions that can begin during pregnancy or after a baby is born.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Timing
- Symptoms may begin during pregnancy or after birth.
- Support
- Talking therapy, practical help, and medicine may be considered.
- Safety
- Thoughts of harm require urgent help.
Recognising the signs
Symptoms can include persistent sadness, emptiness, irritability, guilt, hopelessness, loss of interest, exhaustion beyond expected tiredness, sleep or appetite changes, difficulty bonding, or feeling unable to cope. Anxiety may occur alongside depression. These symptoms are not a failure of parenting, and they can affect anyone, including people with a wanted pregnancy and people without a previous mental health diagnosis.
Finding support
Tell a trusted person and contact a maternity, primary-care, or mental-health professional. Support may include talking therapy, practical help, sleep and feeding support, or medicine selected with pregnancy or breastfeeding in mind. Keep appointments, accept help with meals or baby care, and avoid carrying the distress alone. Perinatal Mental Health Support can help you understand available care.
Get urgent help
Seek urgent help if you think about harming yourself or the baby, feel unable to stay safe, hear or see things others do not, or feel unusually confused, agitated, or detached from reality. Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department, and ask someone trusted to stay with you.
Questions for your doctor
Could these symptoms be depression, anxiety, or another condition? What treatment fits pregnancy or breastfeeding? How quickly can I access therapy, and what should my support person do if my safety worsens?

Questions people ask
Is postpartum depression the same as ordinary new-parent tiredness?
No. Fatigue is common after birth, but persistent low mood, hopelessness, loss of interest, or difficulty functioning deserves assessment.
Can postpartum depression be treated while breastfeeding?
Often, yes. A clinician can discuss therapy and medicines while considering breastfeeding and your individual needs.
