What should you know about perifissural lung nodule?

Fissures are thin natural folds that separate sections of the lungs. A nodule beside one may have the appearance of an intrapulmonary lymph node, a small structure involved in immune drainage. Radiologists consider its borders, shape, density, exact position, and comparison with earlier images. The label describes an imaging pattern; it does not by itself prove that the nodule is cancer. A lung nodule may have several causes, including healed inflammation, scar tissue, or a growth that needs closer assessment.

Bring earlier chest images or reports to the appointment because stability can change the next step. Your clinician may recommend a repeat CT scan after an interval, no immediate test, or further evaluation, depending on the appearance and your personal risk factors. A biopsy is considered when imaging cannot answer the question and the result would change management. Do not stop prescribed medicines or smoking support without discussing it with your care team.

A nodule found on a scan is usually handled through planned follow-up, but seek prompt care for coughing up blood, new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain that is severe or persistent, fainting, or a high fever with breathing symptoms. Emergency help is needed for sudden severe difficulty breathing or blue lips.
