Short answer

Peri cellulitis refers to a bacterial infection in deeper skin and nearby tissue that can cause spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and pain, so prompt medical assessment is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical signs
Spreading redness, warmth, swelling, and pain
Usual cause
Bacteria entering through a break in the skin
Priority
Prompt medical assessment and prescribed treatment

What cellulitis can look like

Cellulitis often affects one area and may become red, hot, swollen, tender, and increasingly uncomfortable. The edge can expand over time, and fever or feeling unwell may occur. A small break in the skin, scratch, wound, insect bite, or infection such as Athlete's Foot can provide an entry point for bacteria. Type 2 Diabetes and other health conditions may increase the need for careful assessment.

Cellulitis is different from a simple surface irritation because the infection involves deeper tissue. A clinician may examine the border, temperature, tenderness, and possible entry point before deciding on treatment. Do not rely on appearance alone to judge severity.

What to do now

Arrange prompt medical review if a red, painful, warm, or swollen area is spreading. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and keep any wound covered as directed. Resting and raising an affected limb may reduce discomfort while you arrange care. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice whether it is expanding, but it does not replace examination.

When it is urgent

Seek urgent help if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe, swelling is rapidly increasing, or you have fever, confusion, faintness, or marked weakness. Emergency assessment is also needed for skin that becomes blistered, dark, numb, or unusually cold, or for symptoms suggesting Sepsis such as difficulty breathing or collapse. Infection near the eye, hand, genitals, or a joint deserves prompt attention.

Questions for your doctor

Where is the likely entry point for the infection? Which treatment do I need, and when should improvement begin? How should I care for the wound or treat Athlete's Foot? What changes mean I need reassessment, especially if I have Type 2 Diabetes?

Questions people ask

Can cellulitis settle without treatment?

It can worsen and spread, so suspected cellulitis should be assessed rather than watched at home.

Is cellulitis contagious?

The infection itself is not usually passed by ordinary contact, but any draining wound should be covered and handled hygienically.
