What ADHD can look like
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition. A person may lose track of tasks, overlook details, interrupt, act quickly, feel restless or struggle to begin and finish routine activities. These patterns can affect school, work, relationships and home life, but they do not measure intelligence, effort or character.
Difficulty concentrating can be especially noticeable during lengthy or low-interest tasks. Some people also experience irritability or feeling anxious when demands, missed tasks or misunderstandings build up. Symptoms can vary with sleep, stress, structure and the setting.
What may help
Start with a clinical conversation about when the difficulties began, where they occur and how they affect functioning. A mental health assessment can review symptoms, medical history, sleep, mood, substance use and other explanations. Helpful supports may include written reminders, breaking tasks into small steps, predictable routines, movement breaks and reducing distractions.
Treatment is individual. A clinician may discuss behavioural strategies, psychological support, education and, when appropriate, prescribed medicine. Keep a simple record of missed tasks, attention changes, sleep and situations that make symptoms easier or harder.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when attention, impulsivity or restlessness repeatedly disrupts learning, work, relationships, driving, finances or self-care. Seek urgent help if there are thoughts of self-harm, severe agitation, confusion, dangerous impulsive behaviour or an immediate safety concern.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms fit ADHD, what other conditions should be considered, how an assessment is completed, and which strategies could support your daily responsibilities. You can also ask how treatment choices are monitored and what to do if sleep, anxiety or irritability changes.
