Peeling skin after cellulitis: what to know

Cellulitis causes inflammation in deeper skin and nearby tissue. As swelling reduces, the surface can feel dry, tight, flaky, or tender and may shed. This does not by itself show whether an infection has fully cleared. The direction of change matters: cooling skin, less pain, and a shrinking red area are reassuring trends, while renewed warmth, expanding redness, or worsening tenderness are concerning. Peeling can also have other causes, including athlete's foot affecting the feet, psoriasis, irritation, or a separate burn.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not stop early because the surface looks better. Keep the area clean and dry, wash gently, and pat rather than rub. Do not pick flakes, squeeze blisters, or cover the area with irritating creams. If the skin is closed and no clinician has advised otherwise, a bland moisturiser may reduce tightness. Elevate an affected limb when resting and follow any wound-care instructions you were given. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice whether it is spreading, but do not delay care to monitor it.

Contact a clinician promptly if redness grows, pain or swelling increases, the area becomes hotter, drainage or pus appears, or fever returns. Seek urgent help for confusion, faintness, rapid breathing, severe weakness, or a rapidly changing skin area. People with diabetes, poor circulation, a weakened immune system, or infection near the eye should use a lower threshold for review. A peeling patch that remains after the infection has settled also deserves examination rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask whether the infection is responding as expected, how to dress or moisturise the peeling area, and which changes should trigger same-day contact. If cellulitis began on the foot, ask whether athlete's foot could have created a break in the skin and how to prevent recurrence.
