What should you know about peeling nail beds?

The nail plate can split into layers after frequent soaking and drying, picking, biting, manicures, or harsh removers. Skin beside the nail may peel when it is dry or irritated. A nail that becomes yellow, white, thick, crumbly, lifted, or unpleasant-smelling can occur with Nail Fungus, although appearance alone cannot confirm it. One affected nail after an injury suggests a different process from several nails changing together. New dark pigment, bleeding, or marked pain should be assessed.

Keep nails short with a clean file, but do not tear or peel layers away. Wear gloves for prolonged water or cleaning exposure and dry hands carefully afterward. Pause gel, acrylic, polish, and adhesive products while the nail recovers. Apply moisturiser to the surrounding skin and avoid cutting or pushing back the cuticle. Do not share nail tools, and clean reusable tools between uses.

Book an assessment if changes affect several nails, continue to progress, or do not improve after removing irritants. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, pus, throbbing pain, or a nail lifted after injury. A clinician may examine the nail and take a sample before recommending treatment, since fungal and non-fungal nail problems can resemble each other.
