Osteosarcoma starts in bone-forming cells. A child may have persistent pain, swelling, reduced movement or a limp, although these features can have other explanations. The tumour may occur near a growing end of a long bone, but assessment is needed to identify its location and extent. Imaging helps map the area, while a biopsy confirms what the abnormal tissue is.

The care team also checks whether disease is present elsewhere and considers the child's growth, function and daily activities. These findings guide the sequence of treatment and the type of operation that may be appropriate.

Keep a record of pain, swelling, movement changes and medicines, and take this to the appointment. Ask for referral to a specialist sarcoma team before an invasive procedure on a suspicious bone lesion. Treatment may include chemotherapy to address cells throughout the body and tumour removal surgery to remove the affected bone and preserve function when possible. Rehabilitation supports strength, mobility and confidence after treatment.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for ongoing bone pain, a growing lump, unexplained limp or reduced use of an arm or leg. Seek urgent care after an injury if there is severe pain, marked swelling, deformity or inability to bear weight. During treatment, contact the oncology team for fever, breathing changes, uncontrolled pain or a sudden decline in function.

Ask where the lesion is located, which scans and biopsy are needed, how the biopsy will be planned, whether treatment starts before surgery, what limb function may be expected, and how rehabilitation and school activities will be supported.
