What should you know about pediatric laryngitis?

Short answer
Pediatric laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box that can make a child’s voice hoarse and may cause a sore throat or cough.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind the voice change
Laryngitis often follows a viral upper-airway illness such as a Common Cold. Irritation from shouting, dry air or smoke can also strain the voice, while Acid Reflux may irritate the throat in some children. A hoarse voice can occur with several conditions, so the duration, breathing pattern and other symptoms guide assessment. Most mild cases improve with supportive care.
Helping the voice recover
Encourage quiet voice use rather than whispering, which can also strain the vocal cords. Offer regular fluids and soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable, and keep smoke and strong fragrances away from the child. A humidified room may feel soothing, but avoid hot steam because it can burn. Do not give antibiotics or cough medicines unless a clinician recommends them.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for noisy breathing at rest, struggling to breathe, blue lips, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or a child who cannot speak or cry normally because of breathlessness. Arrange prompt review for worsening throat pain, dehydration, persistent fever or a hoarse voice that does not settle. A GP Consultation can help when symptoms keep returning or affect eating, sleep or activity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms fit laryngitis, how to protect the voice, whether reflux or another trigger needs attention, and which breathing changes require urgent help.

Questions people ask
Should a child whisper while hoarse?
No. Quiet normal speech is generally gentler than whispering, which can place additional strain on the voice.
When is hoarseness more concerning?
Breathing difficulty, drooling, dehydration or persistent symptoms should prompt medical assessment.
