Pearl laser resurfacing: what to know

The treatment creates microscopic columns of heat in the skin. The surrounding skin remains available to support healing, while the treated areas shed and are replaced during repair. A clinician may use a more superficial approach for tone and fine texture or a stronger setting for deeper textural concerns. It may be discussed for photoaging, fine lines, uneven pigmentation, or acne-related texture. It is not the same as a cream or a simple facial, and redness, swelling, warmth, peeling, and temporary sensitivity can occur.

A consultation should cover your skin tone, history of cold sores, tendency to form raised scars, current medicines, recent tanning, and any active rash or infection. These details can change whether treatment is suitable and how the skin is prepared.

Before treatment, follow the clinician’s instructions about sun avoidance, gentle cleansing, moisturising, and pausing selected irritating products. Do not pick peeling skin afterward. Use the recommended cleanser and barrier-supporting moisturiser, protect the area from sunlight with clothing and sunscreen when advised, and wait for the skin to recover before restarting exfoliants, retinoids, or fragranced products.

Ask how long redness and visible peeling may last, whether you need time away from work, and which signs indicate normal healing. A chemical peel is another resurfacing option, while CO2 laser and thulium laser use different energy profiles; the right comparison depends on your goals and skin.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, blisters, or swelling that is becoming more severe rather than settling. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling involving the mouth or throat, or a rapidly spreading blistering reaction. New or persistent darkening or lightening should also be reviewed, particularly if it continues after the expected healing period.
