What should you know about PDO, PLLA and PCL?

PDO means polydioxanone, a biodegradable suture material used in some thread procedures. PLLA means poly-L-lactic acid, an injectable collagen biostimulator that gradually supports facial fullness rather than acting like a conventional volume filler. PCL means polycaprolactone, another biodegradable polymer used in selected aesthetic products. The product form matters: a thread is placed beneath the skin for support or tissue stimulation, while an injectable is deposited in planned areas by a qualified clinician.

These materials are not interchangeable. Their suitability depends on the treatment area, skin quality, desired change, previous procedures, allergies, medicines and the clinician’s product-specific training.

Start with a consultation that identifies whether your goal is contour support, skin texture improvement or gradual volume restoration. Ask for the exact product name, intended placement, expected treatment sequence and aftercare. Avoid choosing by the acronym alone; formulations, needle or cannula technique and treatment plans vary.

Before treatment, disclose active skin infection, unusual scarring, bleeding problems, immune conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and every medicine or supplement you take. Follow the clinic’s instructions about cleansing, makeup, exercise and pressure on the treated area. A planned review helps assess healing and whether further treatment is appropriate.

Mild tenderness, swelling, bruising or temporary unevenness can occur after an injection or thread procedure. Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening, redness is spreading, the skin becomes hot, drainage develops, a thread is exposed, or a firm lump persists or enlarges. Seek urgent medical care for vision changes, severe headache, facial weakness, breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling.
