What should you know about a PCL sprain?

Short answer
A PCL sprain stretches or partly tears the posterior cruciate ligament and may cause pain, swelling, stiffness and knee instability.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a PCL sprain means
The posterior cruciate ligament sits inside the knee and helps stop the shinbone from moving too far backward. It may be injured when the front of the shin is struck, the knee bends forcefully, or a fall causes a hard impact. The knee can hurt deep inside, swell, feel stiff, or become uncomfortable on stairs and slopes.
A clinician compares both knees, checks movement and tests stability. The grade of the sprain and any cartilage, bone or other ligament injury guide treatment.
What to do next
Reduce activities that involve pivoting, kneeling, running or jumping until the knee has been assessed. Use support if advised, keep movement gentle within comfort, and avoid forcing a swollen knee through a large range.
Rehabilitation commonly focuses on restoring motion, strengthening the muscles that support the knee and improving balance. Physiotherapy provides a structured progression. Kinesiology Taping may be discussed as an additional support, while Splinting can be considered when temporary protection is needed.
When to seek care
Seek prompt assessment after a forceful injury, new swelling, a giving-way sensation or difficulty bearing weight. Urgent care is appropriate for visible deformity, severe pain, numbness, a cold foot or inability to move the knee.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what grade of sprain is suspected, whether another structure may be affected, how much weight you may place on the leg, which exercises are safe, and what signs should stop rehabilitation.

Questions people ask
Is a PCL sprain the same as a complete tear?
No. A sprain can range from stretched fibres to a partial or complete tear, so examination is needed to describe its severity.
Can you walk with a PCL sprain?
Some people can walk, but pain, swelling or instability may make walking unsafe; use the support and weight-bearing advice given after assessment.
