Tests used for a PCL injury

The clinician may ask whether the knee was struck from the front, forced backward, or bent during a fall. They compare both knees for swelling, movement, tenderness, and how the shin sits and moves relative to the thigh. A posterior drawer manoeuvre and other stability checks may be used, but guarding and pain can affect the examination. Magnetic resonance imaging can show soft tissues; X-rays can check bones and alignment.

Bring details of when the injury happened, what movement caused it, and whether you felt a pop or later giving way. Wear clothing that allows the knee to be examined. Until reviewed, avoid sport and deep squats. Once the findings are clear, a plan may include a brace and progressive Physiotherapy focused on movement quality, quadriceps strength, and safe return to activity.

Seek assessment soon after trauma if swelling, stiffness, instability, or difficulty walking persists. Go to urgent care for a deformed knee, an immobile leg, uncontrolled pain, or a foot that becomes numb, weak, cold, or changes colour.

Ask what each examination finding means, whether other ligaments need assessment, whether imaging will alter treatment, and when it is safe to resume specific activities.
