What should you know about a PC-based spirometer?

Short answer

A PC-based spirometer measures how much air you breathe and how quickly you can move it through your lungs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the device does

The device usually includes a mouthpiece and a flow sensor linked to a computer. During the test, you breathe in fully, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and blow out as hard and as long as instructed. Software turns the breath into measurements and visual graphs. These results can help a clinician assess airflow limitation, compare readings over time, or see whether inhaled medicine changes the result. Good technique matters: a hesitant start, air leaking around the mouthpiece, coughing, or stopping too early can affect the reading. The machine supports assessment; it does not by itself name the cause of breathing symptoms.

Preparing for a reading

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the clinic's instructions about meals, smoking, exercise, and inhalers before testing. Tell the clinician if you feel unwell, have chest pain, recently had surgery, or become dizzy during forceful breathing. Sit or stand as directed, use the nose clip if provided, and follow each coaching prompt. Several attempts may be needed to obtain a consistent result. Ask whether your regular medicines should be taken as usual; do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

When breathing symptoms need prompt help

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, new confusion, or chest pain that does not settle. Arrange a clinical review for continuing wheeze, repeated night-time breathlessness, coughing that persists, or a clear decline in exercise tolerance. A spirometry appointment is not a substitute for urgent care when breathing suddenly worsens.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what each measurement means, whether the test was technically reliable, whether medicine was used before or after a repeat reading, and what follow-up will clarify the cause of your symptoms.

Questions people ask

Is a PC-based spirometry test uncomfortable?

The breathing manoeuvres require strong, sustained blowing and may briefly cause coughing or light-headedness. Tell the clinician if you need a pause.

Does the machine diagnose asthma on its own?

No. The readings are interpreted with your symptoms, examination, medical history, and sometimes repeat or additional testing.
