What should you know about PB flow cytometry?

Peripheral blood is the blood circulating through the body, usually collected from a vein. In flow cytometry, cells pass through a laser-based instrument after being treated with antibodies carrying fluorescent labels. The instrument records features such as cell size, internal complexity, and selected markers on or inside cells.

The pattern can show whether an unusual group of cells is present and whether those cells resemble lymphoid or myeloid populations. Results may support evaluation of leukaemia, lymphoma, immune problems, or unexplained changes in blood counts. A report must be read with the blood count, blood film, symptoms, and sometimes a bone marrow biopsy; a flow result alone does not provide the whole diagnosis.

Most people need no special preparation for a peripheral-blood sample unless their clinic gives different instructions. Tell the team about medicines, recent transfusions, and any difficulty with blood draws. Ask when the report is expected and whether additional tests may be needed. A normal or non-diagnostic result does not always end the investigation if symptoms or blood-count changes persist.

The blood draw usually causes only brief discomfort, but seek advice for bleeding that does not stop, increasing swelling, severe pain, or signs of infection at the puncture site. While awaiting results, urgent assessment is needed for fever with chills, severe weakness, breathlessness, unusual bleeding, or rapidly spreading bruising, particularly when an abnormal blood count is being investigated.
