What should you know about patellofemoral partial knee replacement?

Short answer
A patellofemoral partial knee replacement resurfaces the worn joint between the kneecap and thighbone while preserving healthier parts of the knee.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Area treated
- The joint between the kneecap and thighbone.
- Principle
- Resurface the affected compartment while preserving healthier knee areas.
- Recovery focus
- Motion, thigh strength, walking control, and wound care.
What the operation involves
The patellofemoral compartment is the area where the kneecap glides over the end of the thighbone. If damage is confined there, a surgeon may remove the worn surfaces and place a metal component on the thighbone with a smooth plastic surface behind the kneecap. Cobalt-chrome alloy and highly cross-linked polyethylene are examples of materials used in joint implants. The other knee compartments and major ligaments are assessed because a partial replacement is designed for selected patterns of damage, not every type of knee arthritis.
Preparing and recovering
Before surgery, discuss medicines, dental or skin infections, smoking, home support, and how you will manage stairs. Afterward, early movement and physiotherapy help restore knee motion, thigh strength, walking control, and confidence. Use the wound and activity instructions from your surgical team; swelling and stiffness can fluctuate during recovery. A partial replacement may be considered instead of a total replacement when the remaining compartments are healthy, but the choice depends on examination and imaging.
When to seek care
Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, feverish illness, worsening calf pain or swelling, or pain that suddenly changes. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a cold, numb foot. A new inability to put weight through the leg also warrants prompt review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which knee compartments are affected, whether the ligaments are suitable for a partial replacement, and why it fits your goals. Discuss implant materials, expected movement, alternatives such as total knee replacement, driving, work, exercise, and the rehabilitation milestones used at follow-up.

Questions people ask
Is a patellofemoral partial replacement the same as a total knee replacement?
No. It treats the patellofemoral compartment, whereas a total replacement resurfaces more of the knee when disease involves additional compartments.
What materials may be used?
The implant may include a metal component and a medical-grade plastic bearing; your surgeon can explain the selected materials.
