Panic and depression: how they can overlap

Short answer
Panic symptoms and depression can occur together, with fear episodes alongside low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, sleep changes or difficulty concentrating.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the symptoms may overlap
Panic involves sudden surges of fear and body sensations such as a racing heart or shortness of breath. Depression may bring persistent low mood, reduced interest, hopelessness, irritability, tiredness and changes in sleep or appetite. Either problem can make the other harder to manage: fear may lead to withdrawal, while low energy can reduce coping capacity. Feeling anxious alone does not establish depression, and depression does not explain every physical symptom.
Steps that can help
Tell a trusted person what has been happening and keep essential routines as manageable as possible: regular meals, hydration, gentle movement and a consistent sleep schedule. Record mood, panic episodes, sleep and medicines so a clinician can see the pattern. A GP Consultation can assess your symptoms and discuss treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines suddenly or use alcohol or non-prescribed drugs to control distress.
When to seek care
Arrange medical help promptly if low mood, panic or insomnia is interfering with work, relationships, eating or personal care. Seek urgent help for thoughts of suicide, self-harm, inability to stay safe, severe confusion or physical symptoms such as chest pain or fainting. New or worsening symptoms deserve review even if you have experienced anxiety before.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms meet criteria for depression, panic disorder or another condition, and whether sleep problems or medicines may be contributing. Discuss therapy, medicines, follow-up timing and what to do if suicidal thoughts or a severe panic episode develops.
