Short answer

Pain inside the groin area can arise from a strained muscle, irritation in the hip joint, or another nearby problem, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain may mean

Groin pain is felt where the abdomen meets the upper inner thigh. A sudden pull during running, kicking, or changing direction can affect the adductor muscles. Pain that is deep, triggered by turning the hip, or accompanied by clicking may reflect a hip-joint problem such as Hip Impingement or a Hip Labral Tear. Gradual stiffness, reduced walking tolerance, and discomfort after rest can occur with Hip Osteoarthritis. These conditions can present with groin pain, but the symptom alone cannot identify its cause.

Notice whether the pain began after a specific movement, whether it travels into the thigh, and whether coughing, swelling, fever, numbness, or difficulty bearing weight is present. Those details help a clinician separate muscle, joint, nerve, and other causes.

What you can do now

Reduce activities that reproduce the pain for a short period, while keeping gentle movement within a comfortable range. Avoid forceful stretching, sprinting, kicking, and deep twisting until the area settles. Cold therapy wrapped in cloth may help after a recent strain; warmth can feel more comfortable for stiffness. Do not return to sport based only on reduced pain. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess hip movement, muscle strength, and walking mechanics; Sports Physiotherapy may be useful when symptoms are linked to training.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, repeatedly returns, limits walking, or prevents normal hip movement. Seek urgent care after a significant fall or blow if you cannot bear weight, or if the leg looks deformed. Prompt medical attention is also appropriate for severe rapidly worsening pain, fever, marked swelling, new weakness, or numbness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which movement or tissue seems to reproduce the pain? Do I need an examination or imaging? What activity is safe while it heals? Which warning signs should change the plan?

Questions people ask

Can groin pain come from the hip?

Yes. Hip-joint conditions can present with pain felt deep in the groin, especially during turning, sitting, or walking.

Should I stretch a painful groin?

Avoid forceful stretching while pain is acute. Gentle comfortable movement is usually more suitable until the cause is assessed.
