Pads for heavy bleeding after delivery

Bleeding after delivery is called lochia and can change in colour and amount as the uterus contracts and heals. It may increase briefly with activity or breastfeeding, but a sudden increase, clots that are large or repeated, or bleeding that does not settle can signal a problem. Pads make changes easier to notice than internal products. Heavy bleeding can happen soon after birth or later, so the timing alone does not make it harmless.

Use clean maternity pads and note how quickly they become soaked, whether clots appear and whether the flow is getting heavier. Rest, drink fluids and ask someone to stay nearby if you feel weak. Avoid tampons or menstrual cups while healing unless your maternity team specifically advises otherwise. Keep discharge instructions accessible and contact your maternity unit when the pattern is more than you were told to expect. Perineal stitches or repair may also cause local soreness, which should be discussed separately.

Call emergency services or go to urgent care for rapidly soaking pads, faintness, severe dizziness, shortness of breath, a racing heartbeat, confusion or severe abdominal pain. Fever, foul-smelling discharge or worsening uterine tenderness also needs prompt review. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint. Keep the pad available for clinicians if they ask about the amount or appearance of bleeding.
