Oxford Partial Knee Replacement: What to Know

Short answer
An Oxford partial knee replacement replaces one damaged knee compartment, so suitability depends on the arthritis pattern, ligaments, alignment, and symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it replaces
- One damaged knee compartment
- Assessment
- Symptoms, examination, imaging, ligaments, and alignment all matter
- Rehabilitation
- Walking, range of motion, swelling control, and strength work are central
How it differs
The knee has separate compartments that share movement. A partial replacement treats the worn compartment while preserving the other compartments and much of the knee's own structures. It is generally considered when arthritis is limited to one compartment, the supporting ligaments function well, and examination and imaging match the symptoms. Knee Osteoarthritis is a common reason for discussing this operation, but a scan alone does not decide suitability.
The implant uses a metal component and a plastic bearing. Cobalt-Chrome Alloy and Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene are examples of materials used in replacement components. A Total Knee Replacement replaces more of the joint and may be considered when wear is more widespread or the knee has other problems.
Preparing and recovering
Before surgery, discuss medicines, dental issues, skin problems, smoking, weight-bearing limits, and support at home. Afterward, physiotherapy focuses on safe walking, bending and straightening the knee, swelling control, and progressive strength. Use walking aids as instructed and keep the wound care plan clear. Recovery varies with health, strength, the surgical approach, and the knee's condition before treatment.
When to seek care
Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, calf swelling, chest symptoms, or a sudden loss of movement. Urgent help is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, or a cold, pale, or very painful leg. New clicking or stiffness should be discussed if it affects walking or function.
Questions for your surgeon
Which compartment is damaged, and do my ligaments and alignment support a partial replacement? Why is this option preferable to a Total Knee Replacement for me? What implant materials will be used? What activities and physiotherapy milestones should I expect?

Questions people ask
Is an Oxford partial replacement the same as a half knee replacement?
It is a type of partial or unicompartmental knee replacement, replacing one compartment rather than the whole knee joint.
Can everyone with knee arthritis have a partial replacement?
No. The distribution of wear, ligament function, alignment, symptoms, and overall knee condition must be assessed.
