Overnight pulse oximeter

A small sensor, usually worn on a finger, detects changes in light passing through the skin. Overnight recording can show whether oxygen readings remain steady or fall repeatedly while you sleep. Movement, a loose fit, cold fingers, nail products, and poor circulation can create misleading gaps or values.

The tracing is one piece of information. It cannot establish the cause of a low reading or confirm sleep apnoea, lung disease, or another diagnosis. A clinician considers your symptoms, medical history, examination, and the quality of the recording.

Follow the device instructions and wear the sensor as directed for the full recording period. Keep the hand relaxed and warm, check that the sensor stays in place, and note disturbed sleep, waking breathlessness, illness, or equipment problems. Return the device and recording for professional interpretation rather than judging isolated changes yourself.

If the result is unclear, your clinician may repeat monitoring or arrange another assessment. A GP consultation is a useful place to discuss snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, or breathlessness.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not wait for an overnight recording if you feel acutely unwell. Contact your clinician promptly if daytime breathlessness or repeated nighttime waking is increasing.

Ask what the recording can answer, how sensor problems are identified, whether your symptoms call for a sleep or lung assessment, and when you should expect a review of the result.
