What should you know about over the counter tens unit?

Short answer
An over-the-counter TENS unit may temporarily ease some pain through skin electrodes, but it does not treat every cause of pain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sensation
- TENS commonly feels like tingling, tapping, or pulsing.
- Main limit
- It may change pain temporarily without correcting the underlying cause.
How it works
TENS means transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Small adhesive pads deliver a controlled sensation through the skin. People may feel tingling, tapping, or pulsing rather than a painful shock. The response varies, and relief may stop when the device is removed. It should be viewed as one part of a wider plan that may include movement, pacing, and assessment of the underlying problem.
Read the device instructions before use. Place pads on intact skin, keep the unit dry, and stop if it causes burning, marked irritation, dizziness, or worsening symptoms. Do not place electrodes across the front of the neck, over the head, or across the chest.
Using it sensibly
Start with a low setting while seated and check that the pads are firmly attached. Do not use TENS while driving, sleeping, bathing, or operating machinery. Avoid placing pads over infected, broken, numb, or inflamed skin. Ask a clinician before use if you have an implanted electrical device, a heart rhythm problem, reduced sensation, epilepsy, or are pregnant.
Keep a simple note of where the pads were placed, the setting, and whether function improved. That information helps a physiotherapist or doctor decide whether it adds value. Read more about the [TENS Unit](/technology/tens-unit/).
When to seek care
A TENS unit should not delay care for sudden weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe unexplained pain, chest pain, fainting, or symptoms after a significant injury. Seek assessment when pain is persistent, spreading, associated with numbness, or interfering with sleep and daily activity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether TENS is suitable for the suspected cause of your pain, where electrodes should go, which settings to begin with, and what symptoms mean you should stop. Bring the device manual or its model details if you need help checking precautions.
