Over-the-counter medicines for angular cheilitis

Angular cheilitis is inflammation at one or both corners of the mouth. Saliva, lip licking, dry skin, dentures that do not fit well, or an infection can keep the fold wet and irritated. The area may split, sting, crust, or bleed when you open your mouth. A lip balm or bland ointment can reduce friction and shield the skin; this is the same barrier principle used in emollient therapy.

An antifungal or antibacterial medicine may be appropriate when infection is involved, but the right choice depends on the appearance and your health history. A product made for another rash may irritate the delicate mouth area.

Gently rinse and pat the corners dry, especially after eating. Apply a bland protective ointment regularly, and avoid licking, picking, fragranced lip products, and harsh cleansers. Do not share lip products while the skin is cracked. If you use a cream near the mouth, follow its label and keep it out of the mouth.

A pharmacist can help you check whether a non-prescription product is suitable, particularly if you are pregnant, immunosuppressed, or taking other medicines. Do not use a topical corticosteroid on the mouth corners repeatedly without professional guidance; it can mask infection or worsen some rashes.

Arrange a medical review if the cracks keep returning, spread beyond the corners, become increasingly painful, or do not settle with gentle barrier care. Seek prompt help for marked swelling, pus, fever, trouble swallowing, or redness spreading onto the face. Recurrent episodes may need assessment for denture fit, saliva pooling, skin conditions, or nutritional and medical contributors.
