Short answer

OTC acid reflux medication can ease burning and regurgitation, but the right choice depends on symptom frequency, other medicines and possible underlying causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Fastest role
Antacids may help occasional symptoms quickly.
Before combining
Check active ingredients with a pharmacist.
Persistent symptoms
Arrange a clinical review.

How these medicines differ

Antacids neutralise acid already in the stomach and may act quickly for occasional symptoms. Alginates form a floating barrier that can reduce reflux after meals. Acid-reducing medicines, including proton pump inhibitors, lower acid production and are generally used according to the product instructions rather than as an instant rescue remedy.

Heartburn is a common symptom of acid reflux, which happens when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe. Similar upper-abdominal discomfort can also occur with indigestion or gastritis, so repeated symptoms should not be self-labelled indefinitely.

Using an OTC option carefully

Read the active ingredients, dose and maximum duration on the pack. Do not combine products with overlapping ingredients unless a pharmacist or clinician confirms that this is appropriate. Check before use if you are pregnant, have kidney disease, take regular medicines, or need treatment for another condition such as a peptic ulcer.

Smaller meals, avoiding a late meal, staying upright after eating and identifying personal triggers may reduce episodes. Keep a note of when symptoms occur and which product helps; this gives a clinician useful information if the problem continues.

When to seek medical care

Arrange medical advice when symptoms are frequent, persist despite label-directed use, return as soon as treatment stops, or interfere with sleep or eating. Seek urgent care for severe or persistent chest pain, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, or unexplained weight loss.

Useful questions to ask

Ask which medicine suits your pattern, how long to try it, whether it interacts with your regular medicines, and whether another explanation such as a hiatus hernia or Helicobacter Pylori Infection needs assessment.

Questions people ask

Can OTC medicine cure the cause of reflux?

It may control acid or create a barrier, but persistent reflux can need assessment for its cause and a longer-term plan.

Can I take reflux medicine every day?

Follow the product label and obtain medical advice before ongoing daily use, especially when symptoms recur or other medicines are involved.
