What a dog's X-ray may show with osteosarcoma

The veterinarian looks at the bone's shape, density, outer surface, and nearby soft tissues. Areas where bone is being lost or newly formed, an indistinct border, or a fracture may increase concern. Infection, healing injury, and other tumours can create similar appearances, so the image needs clinical context.

X-rays may also help identify whether the bone is fragile and guide decisions about safe handling. Additional imaging can show the lesion's extent, while a sample may be needed to identify its type.

Ask the veterinarian to explain the findings and whether the lesion needs referral to a veterinary oncology or orthopaedic service. Follow restrictions on running, jumping, and rough play if the bone appears weakened.

If testing confirms osteosarcoma, care may involve tumour removal surgery, chemotherapy, pain control, and rehabilitation. The plan is individual to the dog's general health, imaging findings, and family goals.

Contact a veterinarian promptly for worsening lameness, swelling, or pain after an X-ray finding. Seek emergency care if the dog suddenly cries out, cannot use the limb, or develops a bent or unstable-looking leg, as these signs may indicate fracture.
