What should you know about osteomyelitis foot x ray?

An X-ray gives a view of bone shape and density and may reveal destruction, loss of bone detail, a fracture, a foreign object or gas in nearby tissue. Changes may take time to become visible, particularly when infection has just started. An X-ray also cannot by itself identify the organism or prove that every abnormality is infection. The clinician compares the image with the wound, pain, examination and laboratory findings.

Attend the appointment with details about any wound, puncture, operation, fever, diabetes, reduced sensation or previous antibiotics. Depending on the findings, the clinician may request repeat imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, blood tests or a sample from deeper tissue or bone. Keep the foot protected and follow weight-bearing advice while assessment continues. If infection has damaged bone, Bone Grafting may be considered later as part of reconstruction.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe swelling, pus, fever with shaking chills, confusion, blackening skin, a cold or pale foot, new numbness or sudden inability to walk. Imaging is useful, but urgent symptoms need clinical attention even before a report is available.
