What should you know about ordinary tranexamic acid?

Tranexamic acid helps keep blood clots from breaking down too quickly. It may be prescribed for heavy menstrual bleeding and other bleeding problems; it is also used in some specialist skin treatments for melasma. The correct form, dose, and duration depend on why it is being used and on your health history. It does not treat every cause of heavy bleeding.

Tell the prescriber about previous blood clots, kidney problems, vision changes, pregnancy, and all medicines you take. Follow the supplied instructions and do not share tablets with someone else. If heavy periods are new, persistent, or accompanied by pelvic pain, arrange an assessment so the cause is considered rather than only treating the blood loss.

Seek urgent care for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, or a new disturbance in vision. Contact a clinician promptly if bleeding remains difficult to control or you feel faint.
