What should you know about an open crotch compression garment?

The garment applies firmer support in selected areas and less pressure farther along the limb or trunk. This can help limit fluid accumulation and support movement of lymph through tissues. The open crotch design may be useful when a closed garment would make toileting, washing or checking the skin difficult. It does not treat the underlying cause of swelling, and the correct style depends on the body area, swelling pattern, skin condition and treatment plan.

Have a lymphoedema clinician or garment fitter confirm the size, fabric, compression level and direction of pull before regular use. Put it on over clean, dry skin and smooth folds so pressure is even. Check the edges, groin and any area beneath seams for rubbing, colour change, numbness or new pain. Wash it as instructed and allow the skin to dry fully before wearing it again. A garment works alongside movement, skin care and prescribed lymphoedema therapy rather than replacing them.

Remove the garment and seek clinical advice if swelling suddenly worsens, the skin becomes hot or red, a wound drains, or pain, numbness or colour change continues after removal. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or fainting. Do not place compression over an open wound unless the treating team has specifically advised how to protect it.

Ask which areas should be compressed, how long to wear the garment, how to check that the pressure is appropriate, and what to do if the open crotch edge rubs. Ask whether you need a review after swelling changes or after surgery, radiotherapy or other cancer treatment.
