What should you know about oozing rash?

Clear or straw-coloured fluid can come from inflamed, scratched skin. Thick drainage, crusting, increasing warmth, or tenderness raises concern for infection. Oozing can occur with Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Intertrigo, psoriasis, heat rash, Ringworm, or scabies, but appearance alone cannot identify the cause. The location, itch, new products, medicines, exposures, and contact history help guide assessment.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and cover with a clean non-stick dressing if clothing rubs. Wash hands before and after touching the area, do not scratch or squeeze it, and avoid fragranced products or unprescribed steroid and antibiotic creams until the cause is clearer. Keep skin-fold areas cool and dry, and avoid sharing towels.

Arrange medical advice when oozing persists, spreads, crusts heavily, or follows a new medicine or product. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, swelling, pus, red streaks, fever, facial or eye involvement, or breathing difficulty. Babies, older adults, and people with diabetes or reduced immunity should be assessed sooner.

Tell your clinician when the rash began, what the fluid looks like, where it started, recent products or medicines, and whether anyone close to you has itching or a similar rash.
