One side tension headache: what should you know?

Short answer
A tension-type headache can sometimes feel stronger on one side, but new, severe, or changing pain should be assessed rather than assumed to be tension.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How this headache may present
Tension-type headache is often described as pressure, tightness, or a band-like ache, with tenderness in the scalp, neck, jaw, or shoulders. It may follow prolonged screen work, poor posture, stress, jaw clenching, tiredness, or disrupted sleep. One-sided pain can overlap with migraine and other headache causes, so note nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, visual changes, throbbing, and whether movement makes it worse. The pattern and accompanying symptoms help a clinician decide what to check.
Practical relief
Pause demanding visual work, relax your jaw, change position, and gently move your neck and shoulders. Drink water, eat regularly, and aim for a consistent sleep routine. A cool or warm compress may be comfortable. If you take an over-the-counter pain medicine, follow the package directions and ask a pharmacist about interactions or conditions such as pregnancy, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, or blood-thinning treatment. Keep a headache diary so you can identify triggers and discuss repeated episodes during a GP consultation.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, trouble speaking, vision loss, a stiff neck with fever, or pain after a significant head injury. Arrange medical review if headaches are becoming more frequent, waking you from sleep, changing in character, accompanied by repeated vomiting, or not responding to your usual measures. Persistent headaches that interfere with work, sleep, or daily activities deserve a planned assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit tension-type headache or another pattern, what pain relief is appropriate, and how to prevent medication-overuse headache. Share your diary, posture and screen habits, sleep quality, stress, jaw clenching, visual symptoms, and any family history of migraine.
