What should you know about oncomine liquid biopsy?

Tumour cells can release small fragments of DNA into the bloodstream. A liquid biopsy analyses these fragments for selected changes associated with cancer. The result may help the team understand tumour biology, identify a possible treatment match or look for a change associated with resistance.

A blood result is not the same as a diagnosis made from tissue. The amount of tumour DNA in blood can be too low for a clear result, and a negative result may not rule out a change. A tissue biopsy may still be needed to confirm cancer, classify it or answer a question the blood test cannot resolve.

The test usually starts with a blood draw arranged by your oncology team. Ask what genes or alterations the panel examines, what a positive, negative or inconclusive result could mean, and how long interpretation may take. Your clinician will combine the report with scans, symptoms, pathology and your treatment history.

Do not change treatment based on a test report without speaking to the team. If a relevant alteration is found, it may open a discussion about a targeted medicine or another option. If the result is uninformative, your team may recommend tissue testing or another form of assessment.

A routine blood draw does not usually require urgent follow-up, but contact your team for increasing pain, breathlessness, fever, confusion or any rapid change in your condition. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, fainting or sudden neurological symptoms. These symptoms need clinical assessment rather than interpretation from a liquid biopsy alone.
