Oligohydramnios and AFI

Amniotic fluid cushions the baby, allows movement, and supports development. An ultrasound estimates fluid using measurements such as the amniotic fluid index, often shortened to AFI, or a deepest pocket measurement. The result is interpreted alongside gestational age, fetal growth, placental function, membranes, and your overall health.

Low fluid can occur if the membranes leak, the placenta is not working well, the baby is producing less urine, or pregnancy has progressed beyond its expected timing. Sometimes no single cause is found. The number on a report is not interpreted in isolation.

Your maternity clinician may arrange repeat ultrasound, fetal growth checks, fluid assessment, and monitoring of fetal wellbeing. A Growth Scan can assess growth and related findings. Drink normally unless your clinician gives different advice; do not try to correct the result with unapproved remedies. Keep appointments because the plan may change as pregnancy progresses.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for suspected fluid leakage, vaginal bleeding, contractions, severe abdominal pain, fever, or noticeably reduced fetal movement. Attend monitoring as scheduled even when you feel well, because low fluid may have few obvious symptoms.
