OGTT test values

OGTT test values only make sense when matched with the sample time, test protocol, and reference range on your report. The fasting value reflects glucose before the drink, while later values show how glucose changes after the drink.

A laboratory may list fasting, one-hour, and two-hour readings, although the exact schedule depends on the test ordered. Each result is compared with a reference limit chosen for that protocol. A value marked high deserves clinical review, but it should not be interpreted without the other readings and the reason the test was requested.

A result can be influenced by fasting duration, food or drinks taken during testing, illness, medicines, stress, or a sample collected late. The unit and reference interval printed on your own report matter more than a value copied from a different laboratory.

Circle each value and write its collection time beside it. Ask the ordering clinician which result matters for your situation and whether the pattern meets their criteria. Until you receive advice, continue prescribed medicines and your usual pregnancy care plan; do not attempt to correct a reading by skipping meals or making sudden dietary changes.

If the report is incomplete or the units are unclear, request clarification from the laboratory or clinic. A clear copy helps prevent a fasting result from being confused with a post-drink result.

Get prompt advice for repeated vomiting, severe thirst with frequent urination, fainting, confusion, or unusual weakness. In pregnancy, urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid loss, or reduced fetal movement. The urgency comes from the symptom, not from assuming what a glucose value means.
