What Should You Know About OGTT Solution?

OGTT solution is a measured glucose drink used during an oral glucose tolerance test to show how your body processes sugar over time. It is usually a clear or lightly flavoured liquid with a concentrated sweet taste. The drink is part of the test, not a treatment for high blood sugar. A healthcare professional gives you the specified amount and records when you finish it so later blood samples can be interpreted correctly.

The test compares a starting blood-glucose reading with readings taken after you drink the solution. Your body normally releases insulin to move glucose from the bloodstream into cells. If glucose remains higher than expected during the test, the result may suggest that your body is not handling glucose efficiently. In pregnancy, this test may be used to check for gestational diabetes. One result should be interpreted with the test conditions, your symptoms, and your clinician's reference range; it does not by itself explain every cause of a raised reading.

Follow the laboratory's instructions about fasting, medicines, and what you may drink before the appointment. Plan to remain at the testing site while the timed samples are collected. Avoid strenuous activity, eating, or drinking anything not approved by the testing team during the test, because these can affect glucose handling. Sip the solution only as directed and tell staff promptly if you feel nauseated, shaky, sweaty, light-headed, or unwell. If you vomit, the test may need to be stopped or rearranged; do not quietly continue without telling the team.

Tell the testing staff immediately if you develop marked dizziness, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, or trouble breathing after drinking the solution. They can check you and decide whether the test should continue. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, or collapse. Contact your maternity or medical team after leaving if you remain unable to keep fluids down, feel increasingly unwell, or have concerns about reduced fetal movement during pregnancy.

Ask whether you need to fast and which regular medicines you should take on the test day. You can also ask what happens if you cannot finish the drink, when results are expected, and what follow-up is recommended if the readings are outside the clinic's range. If you are pregnant, ask how the result fits with your antenatal plan and whether any further monitoring or dietary guidance is needed.
