OGTT reading: how to understand the result

An OGTT reading is meaningful only with its sample timing, units, and the pregnancy thresholds used by your laboratory. A report can contain a fasting result and one or more readings after a glucose drink. Your clinician reviews the pattern rather than treating an isolated number as a diagnosis.

Check whether the result is marked fasting or taken after the drink, and confirm the unit shown beside it. A reading can be affected by whether you fasted as instructed, vomited, or missed a timed sample. Different services use different protocols, so a value cannot be interpreted safely without its reference range. An out-of-range result may prompt monitoring and support for gestational diabetes.

Take the full report to your appointment and write down when each sample was collected. Ask whether every planned sample was obtained and whether any preparation issue changes the interpretation.
