What should you know about how to do an OGTT?

At arrival, staff confirm your preparation and take an initial sample, often after fasting. You then drink the supplied glucose solution. Further samples are taken at set times so the laboratory can compare your starting level with your response. The exact timing and number of samples depend on the protocol used by your maternity service.

Read the appointment instructions carefully and tell the team about medicines, recent illness or difficulty fasting. Arrive with enough time for registration. Once the test begins, stay near the collection area, avoid food and unapproved drinks, and keep activity light. Bring something to read and a snack for afterward if permitted. Ask for help before standing if you feel light-headed.

Tell the phlebotomist or midwife immediately if you feel faint, shaky, sweaty, nauseated or unwell. If you vomit, the team may need to stop the procedure and arrange another plan. Seek urgent care for loss of consciousness, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding or symptoms that do not settle after you leave.
