What should you know about OGTT at home?

An OGTT is generally not suitable to perform by yourself at home because it needs timed blood samples after a measured glucose drink. A home finger-prick reading can show glucose at one moment, but it does not reproduce the laboratory procedure used to assess how your body handles glucose over time.

An oral glucose tolerance test commonly starts with a fasting blood sample. You then drink a glucose solution supplied or prepared according to the testing service's protocol. Further blood samples are taken at specific times, so the laboratory can compare your starting level with the way glucose changes after the drink. The exact fasting instructions, drink, timing and sample method can differ during pregnancy and outside pregnancy.

A home glucose meter may be useful when a clinician has asked you to monitor readings, but it is a different test. Readings can be affected by hand cleanliness, strip storage, technique, food, activity and illness. They should not be used to diagnose gestational diabetes or to replace a scheduled OGTT unless your maternity team gives you a specific alternative plan.

Ask the clinic for written instructions before the appointment. Confirm when fasting begins, whether water is allowed, which medicines or supplements to discuss, and how long the visit may take. Do not change prescribed treatment or deliberately alter your usual diet to influence the result. Arrange a way to rest afterwards, particularly if you are pregnant or tend to feel light-headed when fasting.

If nausea, vomiting or another problem prevents you from finishing the glucose drink, tell the testing team rather than trying to complete the test alone. They can document what happened and advise whether the appointment should be rearranged or another monitored approach is appropriate.

Contact your maternity or diabetes team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, have repeated very high or very low readings while following an assigned monitoring plan, or feel faint, confused or unusually drowsy. Seek urgent medical help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or a seizure. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether an OGTT is planned.
