What should you know about OGTT and GTT?

GTT is a broad abbreviation for glucose tolerance test. OGTT means oral glucose tolerance test and describes the method: you drink a measured glucose solution, followed by timed blood samples. A glucose challenge test may use a different protocol, so the name alone does not tell you how many samples or whether fasting is needed. Follow the exact instructions on your appointment sheet.

Check whether your clinic requires fasting and whether water is allowed. Ask before taking medicines that might affect glucose readings; do not stop prescribed treatment without guidance. Plan to stay at the facility during the timed collection period. Wear comfortable clothing, bring something to occupy you, and carry food for after the final sample if permitted.

Tell the staff immediately if the glucose drink causes vomiting, severe nausea, shaking, or a faint feeling. Get urgent help for collapse, seizure, severe confusion, or breathing difficulty. A test result needs clinical interpretation rather than a conclusion based on one number or a comparison with someone else's result.
