What should you know about ofloxacin for boils?

A boil is a tender, infected lump that may contain a pocket of pus. Antibiotics can help when bacteria are spreading through surrounding skin or when a clinician identifies a reason to treat with medicine. A sealed pus collection may not improve with tablets alone, because medicine may not reach the centre well; a clinician may recommend abscess drainage. Ofloxacin is not a universal choice, and resistance, allergies, other medicines, pregnancy, and medical history affect prescribing.

Take ofloxacin only when prescribed for you and follow the label exactly. Do not share it, save it for another boil, or stop and restart it without advice. Tell the prescriber about tendon problems, nerve symptoms, heart rhythm concerns, kidney disease, pregnancy, and all medicines or supplements. Keep the boil covered if it is draining, wash hands after touching it, and use warm compresses only if advised and comfortable. Never squeeze or pierce it yourself.

Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, a boil near the eye or nose, several boils, or a weakened immune system. Urgent review is needed if the lump enlarges despite treatment, drainage is not possible, or you feel faint or seriously unwell. While taking ofloxacin, seek medical advice for tendon pain or swelling, unusual numbness or tingling, severe diarrhoea, rash, or palpitations.
